Recommended Locations

This guide highlights some of my favorite photoshoot locations in and around Denver, chosen for their light, variety, and overall feel. From modern urban settings to natural mountain landscapes, the Denver area offers great options year-round for portrait sessions, family photos, couples, seniors, and commercial photography.

General Advice

The Magic of Golden Hour

Timing is everything for that warm, ethereal glow. We aim to shoot during the first hour of light after dawn or the final hour before dusk. Keep in mind that for mountain sessions, the sun often "sets" behind the peaks 20–30 minutes earlier than the official time, so we’ll want to start a bit sooner.

Managing the Midday Sun

Direct overhead sunlight creates deep shadows and squinting. If we have to shoot during the middle of the day, I recommend our urban locations like RiNo or Union Station; the tall buildings act as giant light modifiers, providing much-needed shade and softer, more even skin tones.

Seasonal Sunset Shifts

The "perfect time" changes drastically throughout the year. While a summer session might not start until 7:30 PM, a winter shoot might need to wrap up by 4:00 PM. Always check the seasonal sunset times when picking a date, especially if you have dinner plans afterward!

The Weekday Advantage

Denver's most iconic spots, especially Red Rocks and Wash Park, are incredibly popular on Saturdays and Sundays. To ensure we have the best views to ourselves and don't have to "photoshoot-hop" around crowds, I highly recommend booking a Monday through Thursday session.

Nature & Mountain Views

Mount Falcon (West Trailhead)

If you want wide-open views and a classic Colorado feel, this is a great option. The foothills, trails, and overlooks give us a lot to work with, especially around golden hour. It feels peaceful without being too remote.

Bear Creek Greenbelt

This area has a softer, more relaxed vibe. Trees, open grass, and the creek make it a good choice if you want something natural that doesn’t feel dramatic or intense. It’s especially nice in spring and early fall.

Red Rocks (Trading Post Trail)

This spot has strong visual impact. The rock formations add depth and texture, and the earthy colors work really well with neutral outfits. It’s best earlier in the day or closer to evening when the light softens.

Lions Park (Golden)

One of the most versatile locations on the list. You get mountain views, open space, and water nearby, all in one place. It works well for just about any type of session and any season.

Urban & City Style

RiNo Art District

RiNo is colorful, creative, and full of character. Murals, textures, and changing backdrops make every session feel unique. This is a great choice if you want something modern and expressive.

Union Station

This location has a clean, classic look. The architecture adds structure and elegance without feeling overdone. It’s a good fit for sessions that lean toward a more polished or timeless feel.

*Interior photos require a permit and at least two weeks' advance booking. A $50 fee covers the necessary coordination and planning. Exterior shoots do not apply to this.

LoHi & Riverfront

LoHi offers a mix of city elements all in one area, offering clean lines, brick buildings, bridges, river access, and skyline views. The nearby Riverfront area adds softer light, open space, and additional water views, which gives us more variety without having to move far. This area works especially well for modern, lifestyle-style sessions that feel relaxed but polished.

Dairy Block Alley & Larimer Square

These downtown areas feel intimate and cozy, especially in the evening. Brick, string lights, and narrow walkways create a warm, story-driven look that photographs beautifully.

South Broadway

This area has more edge and personality. It’s a good option if you’re drawn to something less traditional and a little more creative or alternative.

Park & Garden Settings

Washington Park

A classic Denver location with wide open lawns, mature trees, and winding paths that photograph beautifully in every season. The space feels calm and familiar, making it a great choice for relaxed sessions where movement and natural interaction come easily. It’s simple, clean, and timeless without feeling overly styled.

City Park

City Park offers plenty of room to move, seasonal color throughout the year, and glimpses of the mountain skyline in the distance. The mix of open space and city surroundings creates a setting that feels both natural and grounded without being too busy. It’s a versatile option that works well for a variety of session types.

Riverdale Regional Park

This park has a quieter, more open feel with long grass, river views, and big skies. It’s a good choice if you want something natural and understated, especially for sessions that feel calm and unposed. The space allows for easy movement and a more laid-back experience.
